Traditional firefighting techniques are not effective when it comes to Lithium Ion Battery fires. Lithium Ion batteries produce toxic fumes when exposed to water and the extinguisher rated for Lithium Ion fires create a cloud of toxic material which is hazardous in confined spaces.

There is now a new effective solution, Brimstone Fire & Explosion Containment Bags and Blankets. The bags are in use with sections of the Australian Defence Force and overseas militaries. The bags are so effective that NASA uses them for the movement of Lithium Ion batteries to the ISS.

The Brimstone Fire Containment blankets intended use is, to protect members and assets from being damaged in the event of a battery venting or going into thermal runaway. In an enclosed space without protective measures the effects of the flame and smoke could be catastrophic.
